NACHC Quality Training Offered in Iowa on March 27

Registration is now open for the Quality Transformation in an Age of New Health Care Models Training co-hosted  by the Iowa Primary Care Association (Iowa PCA) and National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) facilitated by Pete Townes, which will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, at the Stoney Creek Inn and Conference Center in Johnston, Iowa.

In light of the enormous transformation underway in the country’s health care system, payers and regulators are increasingly focused on improving patient outcomes and keeping costs low.  With the changes and opportunities facing health centers, the onus falls to quality and performance improvement departments to ensure outcomes continue to improve.

The training is intended for quality directors and staff, clinic managers (medical and dental), and operations staff.

HRSA Offers Healthy Start Funding Opportunities

Three funding opportunities under HRSA’s Healthy Start Program have been reopened through Monday, March 31, 2014. For details and links to each Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), visit the Healthy Start technical assistance webpage at

Pending available funds, grants will be for an initial period of nine months – from September 1, 2014 through May 31, 2015, with the possibility of annual continuations thereafter for up to four years.

From closely examining best practices over Healthy Start’s 22 year history, the program is being redesigned to further increase accountability, efficiency and expand services to ultimately improve health outcomes.

All eligible organizations are encouraged to apply. Organizations that applied for the previous Healthy Start funding opportunities that closed in January 2014 may also apply. In particular, we are looking for organizations that:

  • Serve eligible communities in need of Healthy Start services based on perinatal indicators;
  • Demonstrate a track record and capacity for successfully performing Healthy Start activities, as described in the FOA; and
  • Are poised to engage in Healthy Start activities upon the potential receipt of funds in September.

CMS Report Shows Almost 9 Million People Gained Medicaid or CHIP between October and January

As states have gained new opportunities to expand their Medicaid programs, more than 8.9 individuals were determined for Medicaid or CHIP through state agencies and state-based Marketplaces between October and January according to a CMS report released on February 28th. The report includes state-by-state data, and numbers do not include eligibility determinations made through the federally-facilitated Marketplaces. In some states the data includes renewals. Numbers will continue to increase as Medicaid enrollment continues past the March 31st Marketplace enrollment deadline and throughout the year.

Have You Recertified? March 14th is the Deadline for 340b!

Do you participate in the 340b program? Did you know the Office of Pharmacy Affairs (OPA) requires all 340b-covered entities to recertify their information each year in order to continue participating in the 340b program? The recertification has begun for Health Centers and it is absolutely critical that Health Centers recertify before the March 14th, 2014 deadline in order to continue participating in the 340b program. Please contact the 340b Prime Vendor Program with any questions on the recertification process.

Help your local small businesses – Spring 2014 Webinar dates for the ACA Act 101 presented by Small Business Administration (SBA)

Health care continues to be an important issue for small business owners.  The Small Business Administration and Small Business Majority are committed to helping businesses navigate the changes and opportunities in health care through the Affordable Care Act 101 webinar series.

Each week, small business owners can learn the basics of the Affordable Care Act and how they can enroll in small business health insurance marketplaces. Other topics discussed include insurance reforms, the small business health care tax credit, and employer shared responsibility provisions.  SBA representatives help small business owners understand the facts of the Affordable Care Act so they can make informed decisions about providing health insurance for their employees.

Coverage Options for Immigrants in the Marketplace

There are new coverage options for immigrants in the Marketplace that are worth reviewing as the March 31st deadline for open enrollment approaches. “Lawfully present” immigrants within eligible income categories may be able to purchase health insurance in the federal or state-run exchanges, and receive tax credits, without the Medicaid eligibility restriction of a five-year waiting period.  States also have the option to eliminate the eliminate the five-year wait for Medicaid or CHIP coverage for otherwise eligible children and pregnant women, but not for other adults.
